In 2003, Waagner-Biro contracted for the turnkey construction of several double-track railway bridges to be installed on the lines from Negombo to Colombo as well as between Colombo and Galle. The scope of supplies not only provided for supply of the steel structures, but also for planning and implementation of deep foundation works, abutments, supports and erection of supporting structures for a total of 4 bridges. For simple on-site assembly and ease of installation, the steel structures were designed using the modular construction system composed of standardized, compact bridge components.
